The Korean subsidiary expressed confidence in its selection

The American region currently commands over 40 percent share of worldwide consumption of LEDs in medical/biophotonics (devices/equipment); however the region’s market share is set to decrease during the forecast period as the other regions increase at a faster pace.  The Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region is forecast to increase at 27 percent per year.  The Asia Pacific region (APAC) is forecast to increase in value by a multiple of seven-times (7x) during the 2011 to 2018 timeframe, with an annual increase of 32 percent.

Philips Electronics Korea, a subsidiary under Royal Philips Electronics, has announced to appoint Kim Il-gon as the new chief of its lighting branch.  He is set to take office on Sept. 1.

The Korean subsidiary expressed confidence in its selection, and said that Kim’s proven track record in the LED industry will help contribute to the overall growth of the company, especially towards the development of new lighting technologies.

According to company officials, the sector is expected to be a growth engine for the company for at least the next two years. Meanwhile, Royal Philips Electronics posted global sales of more than 11.37 trillion won ($9.91 billion) in 2011.

Chronic compatibility and performance issues include aesthetic problems

The patented Free Dimming(TM) technology enables LED bulbs to dim using any on/off switch, thus eliminating the burden of installing expensive dimmers. It can work with any on/off switch, including wall toggles, paddle switches, pull cords, rotary switches and other types of on/off switches commonly found on walls, extension cords and table/desk lamps.

Industry has estimated that there are roughly 150 million incandescent dimmers installed in the USA alone. In theory, LED bulbs are fully dimmable; however, designing them to be compatible with incandescent dimmers is exceptionally challenging. Such designs add significant complexity and cost to the LED bulb, reduce efficiency, and often result in poor performance that leads to product returns and potential safety issues.

Chronic compatibility and performance issues include aesthetic problems such as flicker, audible hum, "jumpy" dimming, and poor turn-off performance. Others are various electrical issues such as inrush current, which stresses components in both the dimmer and LED bulb, shortening product lifetime and creating safety issues.

Furthermore, support for legacy incandescent dimmers does not address the more than 85% of light bulbs that operate from non-dimming on/off switches. Although there are 150 million incandescent dimmers installed in the USA alone, according to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), there are over 4.4 billion medium, screw-based light sockets in the U.S., representing an enormous, untapped market opportunity.

According to U.S. International Trade Commission Judge David Shaw said in a notice posted on the agency’s website, LG and LG Innotek Co. infringed one Osram patent for LEDs while a second patent wasn’t infringed. The reasons behind the judge’s determination will be made public after both sides get a chance to redact confidential information.

The patent found to be infringed relates to a semiconductor that emits a blue light and has a layer to convert that light to white. The patent Shaw said wasn’t infringed is for a way to make the components so they are less likely to fail from exposure to heat, such as in the manufacturing process.

The judge’s findings, if upheld by the full commission, could result in a ban on imports of certain lighting products made by LG Innotek, which is part-owned by LG and supplies LEDs to it.It’s just one case in a global battle for market share, and LG has filed its own complaint with the agency seeking to block Osram products from the U.S. market.

On a non-GAAP basis, net loss attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders for the third quarter of fiscal 2012 was $8.0 million, or a net loss of $0.29 per diluted share, compared to non-GAAP net loss attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders of $4.3 million, or a net loss of $0.16 per diluted share, for the third quarter of fiscal 2011.

It is therefore developing a roadmap of products aimed at a range of high volume embedded applications, and is already commercially engaged with leading system integrators.

Recently, Philips has signed a partnership contract and agreement with Gold Biotechnology Inc., a supplier of molecular biology research chemicals based in St. Louis, MO, to designate GoldBio as a certified Philips LED Horti Partner.

According to Frost & Sullivan, a market research company, the LED lamp industry in Germany is expected to produce a compound annual growth rate of 27 percent between 2008 and 2018. Many municipalities in Germany see 50 percent of total energy costs being devoted to lighting. The LED lighting used on the SKYTREE has been supplied by Panasonic. The color design scheme of the lighting reflects the traditional Edo roots of the region, with a pale blue, representing the Sumida River, and a royal purple, known as "Edo Murasaki" (murasaki means purple in Japanese) inlaid with gold leaf.

In total, almost 2,000 LED lights are installed on the tower. Six different types of specialist LED lighting designed by Panasonic combined with the company's advanced lighting control systems work to create the stunning colors and spectacular lighting effects on the SKYTREE, as seen during the "Symphony of Light" event of the Tokyo Hotaru Festival.

 Recently, at the energy conservation project recently held in Moscow, The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) China Business Council has announced  China would  inject a total investment of $ 500 million to form "Shenzhen LED Industry Park"  in Russia,which will generate the output of 1.5 billion yuan after the completion .

This industry park is designed to be built into LED-based product manufacturing base and target the markets of Russia and other SCO members. The project encompasses 50 to 100 hectares, consisting of plants, research labs, supporting residence and infrastructures. The park will house enterprises covering varied LED-based application fields, such as LED packaging, outdoor and indoor lighting, LED display etc.There are about 10 high bay light manufacturers will engaged in the  initial phase of the park.

 "On Energy Saving and Efficiency Improvement " passed through Russian Parliamentary has also attracted Shenzhen LED enterprises to invest in Russian market.The regulation rules that starting Jan 1, 2013, Russia is to ban  the production and sales of 75-wattage-and-above incandescent; starting 2014, the ban will spread to 25-wattage-and-above incandescent. LED lighting product required for this project was determined

This work has been carried out as part of the council’s borough wide Carbon Management Programme, which has delivered energy efficiencies of over £200,000 over the last five years in council buildings.

The new light fittings now installed at Water Street Multi Storey Car Park use 45% less energy than the pre-existing system.  Also with the use of light sensor control they will save the council more than 50% on their energy bills.

At current operational times they will also save 35 tonnes of Co2 per annum.

At the same time, the light levels and light uniformity within the multi-storey car park have been improved which will enhance customer experience and security at the site.The project was managed by the councils partnering consultant Norfolk Property Services (NPS) Wigan.

The use of LED technology as an alternative light source was carefully considered and a feasibility of the LED lighting product required for this project was determined and included in the tender.

Following competitive tender local electrical contractors Electra Connect were appointed for installation with the LED lighting product specified being provided by MHA Lighting, based in Atherton.

Several major brands have recently announced their intentions to cut LED bulb prices to encourage uptake in the consumer market. But what impact might this cost-cutting drive have on the quality of the technology we’re supplying and its future in the market?

Consumer reluctance to pay higher prices is a minor obstacle to widespread LED adoption compared with the disappointment and ultimate rejection that would result from technology falling short of expectations. As an industry that has learnt this lesson the hard way, we should know better. After all, we’re still battling the memory of LED manufacturers that over promised, under delivered and left a legacy of considerable scepticism regarding LED performance.

Producing lower cost lamps inevitably means using less efficient, old generation chips, which seriously impact performance; this does not benefit the industry, the end user or the energy efficiency agenda.  Consumers will never be convinced to switch to LED lamps unless they see the advantages that the best LED technology can deliver: high quality light output, long life and significant energy savings.

Light sources are fully concealed or designed to disappear

The first permanent home of the United States Institute of Peace is prominently located near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. The translucent wing-like roofs that connect the building’s three curving sections presented the most challenging lighting problem: to light the Led linear high bay light with no visible sources so they glow softly both inside and outside. A pervasive lighting theme, featuring GE T5 fluorescent lamps, is present throughout the building. Light sources are fully concealed or designed to disappear, revealing and animating, but never competing with the architecture.

The roofs are comprised of an outer diffusing glass and an inner white membrane, with structure sandwiched between these two layers. Forward-throw cove fixtures, with GE 54-watt T5 3000 K fluorescent lamps, are mounted in the tops of walls to light the roofs. This single lighting layer simultaneously provides the interior ambient lighting and the exterior surface glow. Above the uppermost windows, necklaces of matching adjustable monopoints with GE 37-watt Precise? IR MR16 halogen lamps and 39-watt ConstantColor? CMH? PAR20 lamps provide supplemental downlighting. In-grade ceramic metal halide adjustable fixtures illuminate the roof’s overhang, seamlessly extending the glow outside to the roof’s lowest point.

Perimeter offices are fully daylighted, and the clerestories bring daylight into the corridors. Inexpensive T5 fluorescent strips with Led high bay light lamps are integrated continuously into the curving base of the clerestories to indirectly light both the offices and corridors. In addition, each office has a custom T5 pendant with shielding designed to block views into the fixtures from outside or from within the atria.

From Las Vegas to Superior, Neb., GE’s Evolve™ LED Roadway fixtures are saving cities big and small a bundle on energy costs. The 63-watt difference per fixture translates to an average $8,500 monthly electricity savings for Johnny Janosik, which also qualified for an led linear high bay light program rebate by adopting more efficient lighting prior to year's end. The lights replacement project will bring the City of Sydney closer to its Sustainable 2030 vision to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70% from 2006 levels.

"Rolling out LED lights across the city will help us deliver a 70% cut in greenhouse gas emissions, on 2006 levels, by 2030 - one of the led high bay light most ambitious targets of any Australian government," said Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore.”

According to city officials, the LEDtronics LED bulbs were selected because of their high efficiency, appropriate 3000K color temperature, and because they fit inside the existing globe diffusor without significant modification. As well, LED bulbs produce little or no ultraviolet light (UV) which, as generated by the HPS bulbs along with the high heat, causes the polycarbonate globe diffusers to yellow and become brittle.

Additionally, not long ago, Toyoda Gosei filed another lawsuit with the United States District Court for the Northern District of California Feb. 21, alleging that Formosa Epitaxy infringed on eight led high bay light chip patents asserted by the Japanese firm.

The sets include two small, two medium-sized and two larger flashlights ranging from three inches to 7 1/2 inches long.

According to research studies, lighting in schools can dramatically affect children’s health and their ability to learn. Children spend up to 40 hours per week in school buildings. The studies demonstrated that all sapphire, regardless of source, exhibits color at the core level, that the pink hue of GT Advanced Sapphire Furnace (ASF?) material is not indicative of impurities, and that pink led high bay light sapphire does not have an adverse affect on the LED manufacturing process nor does it require extra steps or incremental costs to remove the pink hue. In addition, it was demonstrated that GT ASF pink sapphire material makes the lowest absorption, highest transmission epi-wafers of the samples examined.

The new study is part of a larger comprehensive material characterization project initiated by GT to examine the effects of sapphire material properties on the entire manufacturing processes in the HB LED value chain. The company will present the findings of the color case study at the GG LED Conference, December 9-10, in Shenzhen, China.

Economic Minster Y.S. Shih met with top brasses of Taiwan’s leading LED industry in a bid to brainstorm ideas concerning how to help the manufacturers go through hard competition compounded by the led linear high bay light economic downturn. Everlight Chairman Y.F. Yeh, Lextar Chairman David Su, EpistarPresident M.J. Jou, and LiteOn Technology Chief Executive Officer K.C. Terng, joined the MOEA-held meeting.

Firstly, the attendees expected government subsidization should address LED lighting procurers and electrical consumption, not the manufacturers. However, Shih responded that subsidizing government’s LED-streetlight contracts is easier than consumer procurements because work on consumer subsidization program will involve more government organizations than that on government contracts.

The ministry will spend NT$700 million (US$23 million at US$1: NT$30) in the next three years as subsidy for LED procurements. The fund is earmarked for financing Keelung, Hsinchu and Chiayi city governments to replace a total of 53 million mercury streetlights with LED ones. This year alone, the ministry budgets NT$170 million (US$5.6 million) for the subsidization. Also, the ministry will push for the establishment of a LED lighting joint venture between manufacturers across the Taiwan Straits.

Officials from San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge are about to unveil plans for a light display to mark the bridge's 75th anniversary on Thursday morning on Treasure Island.

The $7 million display would go up next year and feature 30,000 white LED lights on the west span's suspension and suspender cables,according to the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The independently-controlled lights would create patterns based on traffic, weather and the motion of the bridge.

According to Leo Villareal, the artist who designed the display, it would be visible from San Francisco's waterfront but not to drivers crossing the bridge.

According to the company,the Micro SM4 dramatically reduces the component count, cost, complexity and size of the led high bay light system, enabling a cost-effective, high performance LED solution for diffuse and directional lighting, such as 20-40 watt incandescent, 20-35 watt halogen, B10-style (candelabra), and low wattage compact fluorescent lamp replacements.

Using only 4.6 watts of power, the Bridgelux Micro SM4 will deliver between 330 and 520 lumens in both warm white (2700K and 3000K) and cool white (5600K) color temperatures. Minimum 80 and 90 CRI options, with 3-step MacAdams Elipse color selections, will be offered for warm white products. Production shipments of the Micro SM4 will be available in the first quarter of 2012.

The new Micro SM4 features the latest technical advancements in epitaxial GaN layer growth, LED chip design and packaging technologies. These products are configured to align with industry standard drive currents led linear high bay light to simplify the electronic driver selection process for new lamp and luminaire product development, and are offered in both 6V and 12V design configurations to enable driver design flexibility. According to Dheeraj, owner of shop at Ram Narain Bazaar, "The demand for Chinese lights had increased amazingly. Last year, we almost ran out of stock. This year, the demands is expected to reach to new heights."

According to the survey, people choose Chinese lamps mainly base on these following reasons. The affordable price comes firstly. The designer LED bulbs are available at Rs 30 per piece, a set of four crystal balls for led linear high bay light and Ganesh showpiece with LED lights ranges from Rs 150 to Rs 300. Whereas, the Chinese lamps cost between Rs 50 and Rs 100.

Bridgelux hopes to move to mass production of LEDs on a silicon surface within 18 months. And the company is negotiating a joint venture with an Asia-based company to conduct the manufacturing of the new generation of LEDs overseas. Watkins wouldn't identify the company.
