Rookie USA chose LED lighting for its first store for many reasons: Long-term cost efficiency, less frequent lamp replacement, less heat emission resulting in less HVAC expenditure, and the design. “The design of the luminaires for general lighting was very important to us, because the space is an open plan. Additionally, the luminaries had to be functional but also unique. Phoster Industries was the vendor that could provide everything we were looking for,” Rookie explained.
Thanks to its tremendous energy efficiency over standard incandescent lamps, the LED solution will help to reduce annual energy costs by up to 85 percent. The Phoster lamps have a rated lamp life of about 50,000 hours, which almost makes lamp replacement unnecessary, another factor contributing to cutting costs. “By electing to use LEDs for the lighting at its new store, Rookie USA has made a pioneering move in terms of the many advantages of these tiny diodes,” says Douglas Mendelman, Director of Business Development at Phoster Industries. “The combination of the Golden Dragon Plus LED high bay light from Osram and our luminaire systems creates a pleasant atmosphere inside the new store, makes products look their best and lowers energy and maintenace costs at the same time.” Osram Opto Semiconductors and Phoster Industries have already collaborated successfully in the field of store lighting. The joint lighting solution therefore was Rookie USA’s first choice when it came to putting its products in the best possible light.
As part of a pilot study by the Public Works Commission, the city-owned utility plans to convert about 300 conventional streetlights to LED bulbs, which last three times as long and use about half the electricity.
The LED, or light-emitting diode, technology has become increasingly common in everything from traffic signals to flat-screen TVs. Big cities such as Los Angeles and Seattle are aggressively switching their public lighting over to LED fixtures to brighten streets and save money in the long run.
