we look forward to further developments in the automotive industry
As a solid-state solution, LEDs are extremely stable in construction and robust in transport. Showtrax had previously explored retrofit LED tubes to replace the fluorescents but found that the available products weren’t fulfilling their expectations in terms of appearance and light output.
OCG Lighting’s high lumen output ‘daylight’ edge-lit LED panel offered an ideal alternative. At just 42 watts power consumption per panel (saving over two-thirds of the energy consumed using traditional fluorescents), the technology is not only highly reliable but provides an evenly distributed, high-quality light output.
Showtrax’s specialists found they were able to replace the fluorescent tubes with three of the LED panels without changing the structure of the powerhood, offering the possibility to retrofit existing units.OCG Lighting pride ourselves on product innovation. Our technical team worked closely with Showtrax International to develop a unique solution for the powerhood”, explained Simon Leggett, OCG Lighting’s Managing Director. “The Showtrax project has been an exciting new avenue for us to explore and we look forward to further developments in the automotive industry.”
With industry awareness of sustainability issues coming to the fore and organisations such as the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) pledging to cut their carbon emissions by 12% in 2012, LED technology may just light the way.

According to research studies, lighting in schools can dramatically affect children’s health and their ability to learn. Children spend up to 40 hours per week in school buildings. Much of this time is spent under fluorescent lighting that emits hazardous radiation and radio frequency waves that contribute to a toxic “light polluted” indoor environment for students, teachers and staff.
The Enlightened Schools project was launched on FundaGeek, the crowdfunding site for technical innovation. Reaching their $112,000 goal will let SOL take this high performance school project from patent pending to production of LED technology that closely replicates natural sunlight referred to as full-spectrum light. Full-spectrum light research in schools has been shown to reduce hyper activity and learning disorders while improving health and performance in the classroom.

system extending from fabrication of large sapphire crystals to substrate processing
SMM intends to inject the capital investment of ¥1.2 billion (US $120 million) including investment already completed. Through the led high bay light investment, SMM will construct a continuous production system extending from fabrication of large sapphire crystals to substrate processing.
Currently, 2- to 4-inch-diameter sapphire substrates are popular in the market. But it’s a tendency that the demand for larger-diameter substrates is increasing due to needs for cost reductions from LED manufacturers.
Production of 6-inch-diameter substrates requires the fabrication of large-size crystals, but according to SMM, production is technologically difficult and can be performed stably by only a small number of manufacturers worldwide.
Japanese based company NGK Insulators has released new wafer products for electronic device applications in ultra high brightness LEDs. It has showcased at SEMICON Japan 2011 held between December 7 through 9 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba for the first time. In the R&D line-up, there are bonded wafers that achieve new functions previously unavailable with a single material wafer, and GaN single crystal wafers that have low defect density and colourless transparency over the whole wafer surface.

a proper control system for lighting is pivotal for a building to earn LED certification
The studies demonstrated that all sapphire, regardless of source, exhibits color at the core level, that the pink hue of GT Advanced Sapphire Furnace (ASF?) material is not indicative of impurities, and that pink led high bay light sapphire does not have an adverse affect on the LED manufacturing process nor does it require extra steps or incremental costs to remove the pink hue. In addition, it was demonstrated that GT ASF pink sapphire material makes the lowest absorption, highest transmission epi-wafers of the samples examined.
The new study is part of a larger comprehensive material characterization project initiated by GT to examine the effects of sapphire material properties on the entire manufacturing processes in the HB LED value chain. The company will present the findings of the color case study at the GG LED Conference, December 9-10, in Shenzhen, China.
With today’s broad awareness that green buildings offer lower operating costs, increased value and improved ROI, the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED? (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification has become the framework of choice for achieving sustainability at commercial properties. Lighting, which accounts for 40 percent of energy use in office buildings, often dominates the opportunity for energy savings among all electrical systems and can potentially contribute up to 19 credits towards LEED certification, according to Encelium.
Implementation of a proper control system for lighting is pivotal for a building to earn LED certification, as energy performance is the largest driver of the points needed to qualify,” said Terry Mocherniak, former chief operating officer of Encelium, a manufacturer specializing in advanced lighting control and energy management systems for commercial and industrial buildings. “It is also important to note that more accurate monitoring and control of energy-intensive systems like HVAC and lighting help keep energy costs in check.”

In addition, Elemental LED provides several shopping ideas on their company blog for those wanting to give the gift of LEDs to a loved one. These include LED light bulbs, color-changing LEDs, LED strip light plug-n-play kits and LED puck light plug-n-play kits.
Compared with relatively efficient CFLs, the World Bulb uses 35% less electricity and, unlike fluorescent lights, contains no toxic mercury. At a suggested retail price below $15, the World Bulb's payback from electricity led high bay light savings versus incandescent should take approximately 8 months with a calculated lifetime of 17 years based on 8 hours a day of use.

the changeover just involves a simple switch of a bulb
The deal is aimed at replacing 50W Halogen bulbs with 7W & 10W LED lamps, which provide the same amount of light, and last significantly longer. The collective electricity savings potential of this deal is estimated to be 58GWh per year equal to ZAR 41 million and would save up to 60,000 tons of led linear high bay light. Based on calculations of 40-43W less power consumption, each lamp has the potential to annually save 280KWh of electricity equal to ZAR 200. In fact every four lamps installed will save the equivalent of three trees in terms of CO2 absorption. And the changeover just involves a simple switch of a bulb.
Andrew Etzinger Senior General Manager for Integrated Demand Management at Eskom says: “Just like most other countries, both developed and developing, South Africa is facing an energy-constrained future and it is in Eskom’s interest to encourage electricity consumers to reduce consumption where possible. Although we are investing in new power stations to generate enough electricity to meet medium- to long-term demand, improved efficiency is the most practical solution to ensuring our electricity supply will be secure in the short-term”.
“Eskom is committed to using tried-and-tested technology, such as LEDs, in line with our energy efficiency drive and a low carbon future. As an added benefit, a reduction in electricity consumption brings commercial and industrial consumers’ savings on their cost of doing business, reduces their impact on the led high bay light environment and ensures that the country is not confronted with a situation in which demand exceeds supply”.
