which are designed for installation in vehicles to increase
In 2008, the gallium-nitride device (mainly high-brightness LED) market has rapidly grown to $4.6 billion with the availability of high-quality sapphire and silicon-carbide substrates. And increasing demand for blue-violet laser diodes, UV LEDs, and other devices will provide significant growth of advanced substrates such as gallium nitride and aluminum nitride, according to the report. The report says that these advanced substrates will be needed to provide the lattice matching and thermal characteristics necessary to produce high-performance devices at high yields. At the same time, demand for higher device manufacturing throughput and lower costs will push sapphire and silicon-carbide (SiC) diameters from two inches to three and four inches, and ultimately to six inches.
A number of companies are in a position to provide such substrates as the market expands. These include larger established companies such as Sumitomo Electric, Cree, and Samsung Corning, as well as smaller technology-focused startups such as Crystal IS, Kyma, and TopGaN. The effort to develop advanced substrates, as well as to improve conventional substrate properties, is worldwide in scope and includes 80 companies and 65 universities and research centers.Based on the forecast demand for high-brightness LEDs, blue-violet laser diodes, and high-power, high-frequency electronic devices, the worldwide merchant market (excluding captive producers such as Cree) for substrates for gallium nitride devices is forecast to grow from $280 million in 2008 to $470 million in 2013, says the report. Advanced substrates such as gallium nitride and aluminum nitride are predicted to comprise more than 40% of the market in 2013.
The IR products cover a wide range of applications in a variety of output power classes. With a range of up to 200 m – depending on the external optics used – the infrared OSTAR Lighting (SFH 4750) will be showcased at the fair. The beam angle and radiant intensity can be adjusted to the application with standard secondary optics. The hexagonal honeycomb shape enables multiple IR LEDs to be combined into a large space-saving matrix so that the output power can be increased many times and therefore the illumination range can also be enhanced. Its major applications include industrial lighting for camera-based surveillance systems such as CCTV and intelligent transport systems (ITS).The OSTAR Observation also offers impressive performance. It has a range of up to 300 m – again depending on the external optics used – and is therefore ideal for night vision systems which are designed for installation in vehicles to increase the visibility range and safety at night. These IR LEDs can also be used for prefield recognition, for example in precrash sensors or in pedestrian protection systems.

the system according to different weather
With a luminance sensor, the LED lights can be automatically controlled by the system according to different weather, time of day and region. For example, during the daytime, the system will lower the LED light output to cut the power consumption. If adopting the system in a 200㎡ convenience store instead of using fluorescent lamps, the power consumption can be reduced by as much as 53%, said Daiwa House Industry. With the ceramic packaging technology from Kyocera, the Grace Lumino has got a life-span of around 100,000 hours compared to 40,000 hours for general LED lamps. And the color rendering of the system is also much improved with the adoption of a unique light emission method from Nabesho.
Since September 2003 Everlight and OSRAM had been parties of a patent license agreement in relation to white and colored LEDs with conversion technology for some limited applications. Recently, Everlight and OSRAM comprehensively reviewed the terms and conditions of the license and finally reached a new cross-licensing agreement. This new agreement extends the 2003 agreement for all application, including automotive and general lighting and adds a cross license with respect to the use of Everlight's valuable packaging patents by OSRAM. Now, it will be easier for each party to develop and manufacture LED products without concern for the other’s licensed patents. Another benefit, of course, is that customers who use LED products made or sold by Everlight will not be subject to any claims of infringement of OSRAM’s conversion patents in relation to products for all applications that use the LED technology covered by the new agreement.
Further, Everlight and OSRAM signed an OEM agreement under which Everlight will supply OSRAM with certain LED products as OEM products. This OEM agreement was signed at the same time as the patent license agreement, and is hopefully expected to become an integral part of business alliance between Everlight and OSRAM.Other terms of the patent license agreement and the OEM agreement were not disclosed but are not expected to have any material financial effect on either party.Everlight has continued to invest in research and development to strengthen its patent portfolio, and currently possesses 1012 LED-related granted and pending patents worldwide. In addition, Everlight has signed numerous license and strategic partnership agreements with universities, laboratories and companies in the LED industry.

The figures demonstrate that although sales of notebook PCs slowed dramatically at the end of last year, those models that were fitted with LEDs became increasingly popular. Notebook PCs have typically used cold-cathode fluorescent lamps to backlight the LCD screen. But trends towards lighter, thinner and more energy-efficient models have opened up this application to white LEDs.The report noted with the new LED notebooks released by some of the industry's leading brands, including Acer, Dell and HP, the sharp uptick in adoption will continue throughout this year. Nearly one-quarter of all notebooks shipped in the first three months of 2009 are now expected to include led high bay light. And by the end of this year, more than half of all notebooks shipped will feature the energy-saving technology.
Epistar has been developing AC-LED chips since 2004 and has filed more than 10 patent applications in related fields. In 2008, the company obtained a patent license from the Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI). The company says it will join a small number of suppliers that have been at the forefront of AC-LED development, notably Lynk Labs, which build AC-driven modules and light engines, and Seoul Semiconductor, which sells power LEDs that can be connected directly to an AC source.Epistar says that it is aware of the lighting industry’s desire for a “two wire solution” i.e. a light engine without complicated electronics. The AC-LED concept simplifies system design by making the AC-DC converter redundant. For a conventional DC-driven LED design, the AC-DC converter introduces a conversion loss typically in the range of 15% to 30%. Any reliability issues with the converter are also eliminated.
Epistar acknowledges that the luminous efficacy of an AC-LED is lower than that of a DC-LED at the same chip size. However, based on the cost saving from eliminating the AC-DC converter, Epistar is working with a larger chip size, currently 55 mil per side, equivalent to approx. 1.4 mm. Many “one watt class” DC-driven LEDs measure 1 mm (40 mil) per side. Epistar says that its AC-LED chip, when driven at 1 W, has an efficacy of up to 70 lm/W at a color temperature of 5700K. This is equivalent to a DC-driven LED with 85 lm/W efficacy and a converter with 15% conversion loss, claims Epistar.Epistar believes that both AC-LED and DC-LED technologies have their own unique characteristics, and each will be suitable for different applications;led high bay light is best suited for LED spot lights with less than 10 W power, such as MR16 or AR111 replacements. Meanwhile, DC-LEDs are suitable for high-brightness applications such as street lamps or automotive headlights.

The design functionality of illumisys lighting technology
There were high hopes about UVC applications two years ago but real applications are still missing due to significant technical and economic challenges for UV LEDs: power output, efficiency, lifetime and cost. Hence UVC players are now focusing on UVA. The first led high bay light applications are mostly for scientific analytical instruments. It is expected that the first large-scale sales for the disinfection market will appear in 2010 on existing markets and also new Point of Use or portable applications where compactness is a key issue. The resort will provide feedback on the performance of the tubes to help improve the design and functionality of illumisys lighting technology.
Dave Simon, the president of ilumisys says businesses that need to keep the lights on 24/7 realize that there are more efficient and sustainable methods for lighting than florescent tubes. The LED market is growing rapidly, and by simplifying installation, their commercial grade lighting technology is clearly enabling broader adoption of solid-state lighting. The company points out that the LED-based fluorescent tube replacements are more energy efficient, and unlike the fluorescent tubes, they are mercury-free. illumisys illumisys explained that the 500 million to 600 million fluorescent tubes discarded annually in the United States introduce an estimated two to four tons of mercury to the environment, despite industry and government efforts to limit mercury content and encourage recycling.
YAHAM is a Troy, Michigan-based company focused on next-generation solid-state lighting technology. The company was formed in 2007 as a spinoff venture and wholly owned subsidiary of led high bay light Initial products will be derived from Altair's intellectual property as they relate to the direct replacement of fluorescent and incandescent light tubes with LED lamps. The company recently expanded its channel partner network to include companies covering the Northeast, Midwest and West Coast territories.

Veeco Instruments has to restructure its MOCVD systems business, as the downturn continues to take its toll on the wider semiconductor industry. At Veeco Q4 earnings call, John Peeler, CEO of the company, has announced its MOCVD systems operation in New Jersey would be hit by the latest move. He said their MOCVD systems business would go to a fully outsourced model by the end of the year. He also outlined a number of wider measures to cut costs, including a 26% reduction in workforce. Veeco will employ less than 1000 employees by the end of 2009.
Demand for MOCVD and other epitaxy equipment, predominantly for HB LED and multi-junction solar cell fabrication, remained strong through the closing months of 2008, however. Korean LED maker LG Innotek ordered four of Veeco's K465 MOCVD tools, while another multi-system order was received from an unspecified maker of multi-junction solar cells. Of $110 million sales in the final quarter of 2008, LED and solar applications accounted for $37.6 million.Total equipment sales for LED and solar applications, which includes thermal sources for CIGS deposition, reached $166 million in 2008, representing 43% of overall Veeco sales and replacing data storage as Veeco's single biggest application market.Orders for LED and solar cell equipment also jumped 69% sequentially to $44 million in the last three months of 2008, helped substantially by the led high bay light. And although some LED manufacturers, particularly those in Taiwan, have delayed delivery of MOCVD equipment in recent weeks, Peeler does not believe that this will lead to substantial order cancellations.

the increased demand for point to point indication
The company says its new ORCA product family is an expansion of its high power LEDs designed for use on standard printed circuit boards (PCBs) for LED indication. The new ORCA series replaces the Bivar MAKO product family and enhances its capabilities with greater luminous intensity, higher power efficiency and additional lens configurations while maintaining its industry standard 7.6 mm square package form factor. The new led high bay light series of Super Flux LEDs provides increased luminous intensity with higher current capability and greater power efficiency. The ORCA family is available in the standard colors of red, green, blue, yellow, and white and also includes three bi-color combinations and RGB. The red and yellow ORCAs are compatible with SAE and ECE color requirements making them ideal for automotive applications.
ORCA series lens geometries include dome, oval and flat to provide viewing angles of 30 degrees, 45 degrees, 80 degrees and wide 160 degrees. The operational life of the ORCA series is up to 100,000 hours when operated within specified limits. The 7.6 mm package is designed to withstand high levels of shock and vibration that would otherwise damage traditional LED packages and filament-based light sources. Like all Bivar LEDs, the ORCA series of Super Flux LEDs is fully RoHS compliant.Bivar has established an industry-leading position as an innovator in optoelectronics and assembly hardware. Bivar’s LED and light pipe products meet the increased demand for point to point indication and address a growing range of industrial markets and applications. The company’s corporate headquarters are located in Southern California, with manufacturing in California, China and Taiwan. Bivar is widely supported by a highly qualified network of authorized representatives and distributors.
It’s known that Samsung and LG have launched their newest LED-backlit models at a price of under NT$60,000 per unit, in a bid to fuel consumer demand with such low prices. This is expected to create huge business potential for the upstream LED suppliers, like Epistar, in the near future. Institutional investors indicated that prices drops are gradually boosting popularity of LED-backlit LCD TVs worldwide. In comparison, an LED-backlit led high bay light TV generally uses over 1,000 LED chips, 10 times the amount for either a mobile phone or notebook PC. Based on the product’s 2% penetration rate in the global LCD TV market, there will be approximately 3 billion LED chips in demand this year.

light bulb that would result in lower efficiency
Sunon LED indoor lighting cooling technology has a unique, patent blocking ring design. At the module’s ventilator inlet, a blocking ring that can control airflow and increase the speed of airflow is added. On the one hand, it can quickly bring hot air out, prevent hot air from flowing back to the light bulb to produce high temperature, and considerably increase cooling efficiency.Built on a patented loop design, the fan rotates clockwise to clean the led high bay light dust on the bulb at the moment it starts up. This is to avoid any dust - drawn into the fan during rotation - being blown into the cooling module and light bulb that would result in lower efficiency. After rotating clockwise for a few seconds, the fan automatically rotates counter-clockwise for cooling. This leading technology not only increases light bulb cooling efficiency; it also demonstrates Sunon’s outstanding achievement in prolonging the LED light bulb’s overall service life.
Sunon has devoted considerable amount of research time and effort to sound quality engineering. The firm also emphasizes the balance of sound quality and silence design, and thus Sunon fan products can be applied to digital families. Quality sound products like low-noise MagLev Motor Fan and Super Silence Fan all received high recognition from customers and are applied widely.LEDs are forecast for growth this year, given that almost all other components will suffer revenue contractions in 2009. Although a 2.9% increase is only a moderate rise by the standards of the semiconductor industry, any revenue growth at all this year will be a remarkable accomplishment. Several major semiconductor categories are expected to suffer revenue declines for the year.

The new LED lights also offer better color
Swoboda says Cree introduced the first lighting class LEDs two years ago, then, “It took two years to get a reasonable number of their products into the market so you could go out and buy them.” Now, he says, the led high bay light advantages over both incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lighting are starting to pay off. He points out Incandescent bulbs are not at all efficient, they generate 95 percent heat and only 5 percent light, which is better than a gas lamp, but not efficient. A 12-watt LED is equivalent to a 65 watt incandescent bulb—an 85 percent energy savings.
On average in the United States, running a 65-watt light for 50,000 hours would cost $325 in electricity alone. Because the Cree LR6 LED uses only 12 watts, running the light for 50,000 hours will cost only $60 under the same scenario. And you would be changing incandescent bulbs in that period, because 50,000 hours is 50 times the life of a typical incandescent and five times that of a fluorescent lamp. The new LED lights also offer better color and half the energy use of fluorescent lighting, not to mention being much more environmentally friendly than fluorescents, which contain mercury. Swoboda admits it may take a while for consumers to adopt more expensive LED lighting, but larger government and business users see the value.
Cree recently announced two major government installations including an entire wing of the Pentagon. This isn’t something coming, it’s beginning now, Swoboda says, “with real products installed in real applications today. Anywhere you see a traditional light source, there is an opportunity for LED replacement. We should see the first LED automotive headlamps in a the next year or two. Manufacturers are already using them as accent lights and most interior lights are already LEDs. There’s also a big trend to use led high bay light in notebook computer screens. Apple Computer, for instance, recently said it will use LED backlighting exclusively as part of its green initiative.

The order for LEDs used in signboards is also increasing
In addition, the company expects the new LED lights to continue working without failure for many years to come. DARPA's support was instrumental in accelerating this technology to allow them to help the Fleet reduce its maintenance woes and fuel costs while improving the sailor's visibility.Develops, manufactures and markets lighting systems for wide-ranging uses in both the general commercial and the pool and spa lighting markets. Energy Focus led high bay light systems offer energy savings, heat dissipation and maintenance cost benefits over conventional lighting for multiple applications. The Company's headquarters are located at 32000 Aurora Rd., Solon, Ohio. The Company has additional offices in California, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
Lumens decided to keep its manufacturing line during year-end and a new year. Even on the Christmas day, it didn’t stop the manufacturing line. To meet the order, the company decided to operate the manufacturing line even during the lunatic New Year day, a traditional holiday in Korea. As the order reduced in the fourth quarter, its output has been slightly lowered. But, as panel makers focused on the LED BLUs as new products for the next year, the order has increased in December. Also, the order for LEDs used in keypads and camera flash of mobile phones which will be released in the first quarter of the next year. To meet the order, they have to run the manufacturing line without holidays. The order for LEDs used in signboards is also increasing.
Seoul Semiconductors run its manufacturing line on the next day of the Christmas day. The order has slightly reduced in December, compared with that of October and November. But, it still runs two shifts. Even during the holidays on New Year’s day and lunatic New Year’s day, it will run the manufacturing line. This year, it is likely to make a 15 year high by surpassing last year’s record of KRW 250.2 billion. In the upcoming year, the led high bay light market will be open with an explosive increase of demand. Also, the LED market for notebook BLUs will show a different atmosphere. Vice President Jung Dae-young at Seoul Semiconductors noted.

the polarization of light for improved lighting technologies
The firm claims that over the next 10 years, savings of more than $1.8 trillion will eliminate the need to burn almost a billion barrels of oil in power plants that would otherwise produce 10 gigatons in the carbon dioxide emissions.Professor Jong Kyu Kim pointed out that such enormous savings will result from replacing 80 percent of traditional led high bay light with LEDs over the next 10 years. And besides replacement, there are also new capabilities possible in this lighting revolution—such as controlling the spectrum and spatial emission pattern, the polarization of the light and temporal modulation.
RPI's Smart Lighting Engineering Resource Center recently received $18.5 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Together with Boston University and the University of New Mexico, the Smart Resource Center will, over the next five years, develop novel optical materials, new device technologies, and applications of smart lighting technologies.Kim and Schubert claim that the LED is to lighting technology, what the transistor was to the vacuum tube. Namely, transistors began as a simple replacement technology for vacuum tubes, but evolved into a revolution in IC. Likewise, they claim that the LED will begin as simple replacements, but will evolve into integrated lighting systems with functions as diverse as transistors have provided for ICs.
Simple replacement results in a 20-time savings in energy over of incandescent bulbs and a five-time savings when compared to compact fluorescent bulbs. Beyond replacements, however, LEDs promise to enable new applications that RPI's Smart Lighting Engineering Resource Center is concentrating on developing. The three top candidates being developed by RPI are: control of the light spectrum for medical applications, control of temporal modulation for wireless optical networking, and control of the polarization of led high bay light for improved lighting technologies.Spectrum control will enable lighting to change color during the day to positively influence the mood of workers, as well as cure some medical problems that are caused today by poor lighting conditions, according to RPI.
