LED lighting product required for this project was determined

This work has been carried out as part of the council’s borough wide Carbon Management Programme, which has delivered energy efficiencies of over £200,000 over the last five years in council buildings.

The new light fittings now installed at Water Street Multi Storey Car Park use 45% less energy than the pre-existing system.  Also with the use of light sensor control they will save the council more than 50% on their energy bills.

At current operational times they will also save 35 tonnes of Co2 per annum.

At the same time, the light levels and light uniformity within the multi-storey car park have been improved which will enhance customer experience and security at the site. The project was managed by the councils partnering consultant Norfolk Property Services (NPS) Wigan.

The use of LED technology as an alternative light source was carefully considered and a feasibility of the LED lighting product required for this project was determined and included in the tender.

Following competitive tender local electrical contractors Electra Connect were appointed for installation with the LED lighting product specified being provided by MHA Lighting, based in Atherton.

the ability to monitor and control a property from one centralized location

One such advanced system is the ENCELIUM? Energy Management System (EMS) from OSRAM SYLVANIA. The ENCELIUM EMS has been proven to cut lighting energy expenditures by 50 to 75 percent, significantly reduce CO2 emissions, and provide payback on investment faster than other environmental measures. An ideal solution for both retrofits and new construction, the EMS, formerly known as the Energy Control System, has been installed in more than 45 million square feet of commercial space across North America and Europe. An intelligent lighting control system like EMS can integrate lighting controls with other building automation systems, such as HVAC, fire and security, providing a user the ability to monitor and control a property from one centralized location. And just as important for retailers, advanced lighting controls improve illumination quality, which is essential for customer satisfaction.

OSRAM recently introduced its ENCELIUM Polaris 3D? software, the first-of-its-kind, web-based application featuring an interactive three-dimensional view of a property in real-time. Polaris 3D creates energy savings reports for a floor, zone, or even a fixture based on the desired timeline whether it is a day, week, month or year. These capabilities enable users to quickly identify irregularities and make adjustments as needed.

An intelligent lighting control system regularly meets or exceeds today’s sustainable requirements, and incentives are often available to property owners to help offset the financial investment of new energy-efficient systems. Incentives range from local utility efforts to state and federal programs.

their intentions to cut LED bulb prices to encourage uptake in the consumer market

The indoor recessed LED collection is packaged with a mid-power LED light engine that runs very cool, thus delivering over 90% initial light output at 100,000 hours of operation. The entire collection comes standard with 0-10v dimming, is 100% serviceable from below, and has been rigorously and independently tested (LM79 and LM80). The HPR-LED ships in 10-days or less, is DesignLights? Consortium (DLC) qualified and Buy American Act of 2009 compliant.

Several major brands have recently announced their intentions to cut LED bulb prices to encourage uptake in the consumer market. But what impact might this cost-cutting drive have on the quality of the technology we’re supplying and its future in the market?

Consumer reluctance to pay higher prices is a minor obstacle to widespread LED adoption compared with the disappointment and ultimate rejection that would result from technology falling short of expectations. As an industry that has learnt this lesson the hard way, we should know better. After all, we’re still battling the memory of LED manufacturers that over promised, under delivered and left a legacy of considerable scepticism regarding LED performance.

Producing lower cost lamps inevitably means using less efficient, old generation chips, which seriously impact performance; this does not benefit the industry, the end user or the energy efficiency agenda.  Consumers will never be convinced to switch to LED lamps unless they see the advantages that the best LED technology can deliver: high quality light output, long life and significant energy savings.

Light sources are fully concealed or designed to disappear

The first permanent home of the United States Institute of Peace is prominently located near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. The translucent wing-like roofs that connect the building’s three curving sections presented the most challenging lighting problem: to light the Led linear high bay light with no visible sources so they glow softly both inside and outside. A pervasive lighting theme, featuring GE T5 fluorescent lamps, is present throughout the building. Light sources are fully concealed or designed to disappear, revealing and animating, but never competing with the architecture.

The roofs are comprised of an outer diffusing glass and an inner white membrane, with structure sandwiched between these two layers. Forward-throw cove fixtures, with GE 54-watt T5 3000 K fluorescent lamps, are mounted in the tops of walls to light the roofs. This single lighting layer simultaneously provides the interior ambient lighting and the exterior surface glow. Above the uppermost windows, necklaces of matching adjustable monopoints with GE 37-watt Precise? IR MR16 halogen lamps and 39-watt ConstantColor? CMH? PAR20 lamps provide supplemental downlighting. In-grade ceramic metal halide adjustable fixtures illuminate the roof’s overhang, seamlessly extending the glow outside to the roof’s lowest point.

Perimeter offices are fully daylighted, and the clerestories bring daylight into the corridors. Inexpensive T5 fluorescent strips with Led high bay light lamps are integrated continuously into the curving base of the clerestories to indirectly light both the offices and corridors. In addition, each office has a custom T5 pendant with shielding designed to block views into the fixtures from outside or from within the atria.

From Las Vegas to Superior, Neb., GE’s Evolve™ LED Roadway fixtures are saving cities big and small a bundle on energy costs. With the installation of more than 41,000 GE Evolve LED streetlights, Las Vegas will reduce combined electricity and maintenance expense to nearly $2.7 million a year, while in Superior, 600 LED fixtures have shaved $20,000 off annual spending for the town of 2,000.

what the Internet has done for computing

Lumentalk will change the way electrical engineers, lighting designers, architects and electrical contractors think about upgrading to LED lighting fixtures,” said Fran?ois-Xavier Souvay, Founder, President and Led linear high bay light. “LEDs are made of silicon; essentially they’re semiconductors that happen to emit light. And just like computers, LEDs can communicate information, not just illuminate. Lumentalk turns LED fixtures into networks that can do for lighting what the Internet has done for computing – enable us to think of lighting as an intelligent system that’s scalable from simple broadcast dimming options to complex energy harvesting systems.”

According to lighting designer Iain Ruxton, Associate at Speirs + Major, the technology will reduce the complexity of refurbishing older buildings. “Lumentalk will save time and money, enabling you to introduce modern lighting capability without having to install new cables. You don’t want to open old walls, and the older they are, the nastier they can be. This is a big win for retrofits and refurbishments projects, saving time, money and client disruption. On top of that, because it works across manufacturers’ hardware, Lumentalk eliminates any battles about compatibility, which brings a savings in contractual complexity, too.”

The new lens enables up to a five percent increase in system efficacy compared to the standard lens and delivers an unrivalled hemispheric light pattern. Cree LMH2 modules enable true 50 watt and 70 watt ceramic metal halide LED replacements and support an expansive range of lighting applications, including downlights, wall sconces, pendants, flush-mounted, spot, track and ceiling fan lights.

The new barrier-breaking LMH2 module is also now available with a 120-277V universal driver with 0/1-10 volt dimming capability. The extremely versatile and modular Led high bay light offers a range of lumen, color temperature, driver and beam shape options in one common form factor – enabling lighting manufacturers to quickly customize their applications and speed time-to-market.

The new luminaire introduces a deceptively simple yet highly efficient optical design approach that integrates an upward-facing LED light strip with Cree TrueWhite? Technology and an ultra-lightweight upper reflector, featuring all-new Cree MicroMixing Optics for precise optic control. The CS Series comes standard with 0-10V dimming control to five percent and features a seven year warranty.

“Everything we do at Cree is focused on accelerating LED acceptance and the latest CS Series innovation delivers on our promise and truly provides a no-compromise alternative to fluorescent lighting,” Elien continued. “Businesses no longer have to choose between color quality and savings and no longer have to suffer the poor performance, toxic mercury and hazardous disposal expense inherent with fluorescent lighting. The color quality and visual impact offered by Cree CS Series makes it the ideal solution for large retailers and industrial users.”

New, innovative Cree MicroMixing Optics are formed from thousands of tiny impressions imprinted on the state-of-the-art highly reflective polymer material. Unlike direct-view Led high bay light solutions, this multi-faceted pattern blends and softens the intense light and redirects it with precise control and color mixing. The result is beautifully balanced white light with optimal distribution within the desired area.

LEDs will further mitigate maintenance spending at Johnny Janosik where halogen lamps

The 63-watt difference per fixture translates to an average $8,500 monthly electricity savings for Johnny Janosik, which also qualified for an led linear high bay light program rebate by adopting more efficient lighting prior to year's end. Energize Delaware offers a variety of avenues for commercial businesses to become partners in Delaware's sustainable energy future.

"GE worked hard to show us what our savings would be and closely coordinated with Energize Delaware to fully realize our refund opportunity," said Dan Ringer, CFO for Johnny Janosik. "At each step along the way GE was a valuable partner to have in our corner."

Rated for 25,000-hours life, GE's PAR30 LEDs will further mitigate maintenance spending at Johnny Janosik where halogen lamps had lasted between 3,000 to 5,000 hours, requiring once-a-year replacement of burnt bulbs at a cost of $5 each-an annual $20,000 investment.

"Six months after the store opened in 2006 we entered a constant state of changing lights," recalls Ringer. "Every day there were led high bay light going out, and when you have several thousand you just can't keep up on it. We're relieved that won't be an issue any longer for years to come."
