Mr. Han, Sales Manager at GE Lighting, elaborated: “The brief fromHollys Coffee called for a solution that would be more energy-efficient compared to their existing lighting system, as well as to maintain the same lighting level while using fewer lamps. After studying the operational and experiential considerations at the individual branches, our team proposed an energy-efficient solution comprising the innovative LED PAR30 lights to replace the halogen lamps. This solution also allowed for adjustment of beam angles so that we could apply the lighting accordingly to provide optimal atmospheric experienceat each Hollys Coffee branch. A total of 1,500 units of LED PAR30 lights were installed in 18 Holly Coffee branches across Korea.

The Korean subsidiary expressed confidence in its selection

The American region currently commands over 40 percent share of worldwide consumption of LEDs in medical/biophotonics (devices/equipment); however the region’s market share is set to decrease during the forecast period as the other regions increase at a faster pace.  The Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region is forecast to increase at 27 percent per year.  The Asia Pacific region (APAC) is forecast to increase in value by a multiple of seven-times (7x) during the 2011 to 2018 timeframe, with an annual increase of 32 percent.

Philips Electronics Korea, a subsidiary under Royal Philips Electronics, has announced to appoint Kim Il-gon as the new chief of its lighting branch.  He is set to take office on Sept. 1.

The Korean subsidiary expressed confidence in its selection, and said that Kim’s proven track record in the LED industry will help contribute to the overall growth of the company, especially towards the development of new lighting technologies.

According to company officials, the sector is expected to be a growth engine for the company for at least the next two years. Meanwhile, Royal Philips Electronics posted global sales of more than 11.37 trillion won ($9.91 billion) in 2011.

Chronic compatibility and performance issues include aesthetic problems

The patented Free Dimming(TM) technology enables LED bulbs to dim using any on/off switch, thus eliminating the burden of installing expensive dimmers. It can work with any on/off switch, including wall toggles, paddle switches, pull cords, rotary switches and other types of on/off switches commonly found on walls, extension cords and table/desk lamps.

Industry has estimated that there are roughly 150 million incandescent dimmers installed in the USA alone. In theory, LED bulbs are fully dimmable; however, designing them to be compatible with incandescent dimmers is exceptionally challenging. Such designs add significant complexity and cost to the LED bulb, reduce efficiency, and often result in poor performance that leads to product returns and potential safety issues.

Chronic compatibility and performance issues include aesthetic problems such as flicker, audible hum, "jumpy" dimming, and poor turn-off performance. Others are various electrical issues such as inrush current, which stresses components in both the dimmer and LED bulb, shortening product lifetime and creating safety issues.

Furthermore, support for legacy incandescent dimmers does not address the more than 85% of light bulbs that operate from non-dimming on/off switches. Although there are 150 million incandescent dimmers installed in the USA alone, according to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), there are over 4.4 billion medium, screw-based light sockets in the U.S., representing an enormous, untapped market opportunity.

LED light exports from Guangdong were worth more than 34 billion yuan in 2011, accounting for about 25 percent of the LED light output in the province. Products sold to the US and EU made up two-thirds of the province's LED exports.

Meanwhile, it is also working with companies to set up a working mechanism against LED technical trade barriers.Currently, the major products of Zhongtian Lighting are LED tube lights and LED spot lights. Mr Li also said that Zhongtian would greatly promote its core products, LED flood lights and LED tunnel lights.

According to U.S. International Trade Commission Judge David Shaw said in a notice posted on the agency’s website, LG and LG Innotek Co. infringed one Osram patent for LEDs while a second patent wasn’t infringed. The reasons behind the judge’s determination will be made public after both sides get a chance to redact confidential information.

The patent found to be infringed relates to a semiconductor that emits a blue light and has a layer to convert that light to white. The patent Shaw said wasn’t infringed is for a way to make the components so they are less likely to fail from exposure to heat, such as in the manufacturing process.

The judge’s findings, if upheld by the full commission, could result in a ban on imports of certain lighting products made by LG Innotek, which is part-owned by LG and supplies LEDs to it.It’s just one case in a global battle for market share, and LG has filed its own complaint with the agency seeking to block Osram products from the U.S. market.

GAAP net loss attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders for the third quarter of fiscal 2012 was $10.0 million, or a net loss of $0.36 per diluted share, compared to GAAP net loss attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders of $5.1 million, or a net loss of $0.19 per diluted share, for the third quarter of fiscal 2011. On a non-GAAP basis, net loss attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders for the third quarter of fiscal 2012 was $8.0 million, or a net loss of $0.29 per diluted share, compared to non-GAAP net loss attributable to SemiLEDs stockholders of $4.3 million, or a net loss of $0.16 per diluted share, for the third quarter of fiscal 2011.

switching matrices to modulate the light pattern

LED’s proprietary microLED platform technology was developed over a 10 year period at the Institute of Photonics at the University of Strathclyde, where over £7m was invested in research leading to the core patent. The firm was spun off in June 2010 with a £150,000 round of seed funding, led by investment from Braveheart via both the Strathclyde Innovation Fund (SIF) and the Alpha EIS Fund, supplemented by Scottish Enterprise's Scottish Seed Fund.

The microLEDs consist of dense arrays of thousands of high-brightness light emitters in a compact, integrated package. Unlike other micro-display technologies, microLEDs are pattern programmable and do not require external components such as optics and switching matrices to modulate the light pattern, making them more compact and efficient.

The programmable micro-pixellated LED technology is reckoned to bring an order-of-magnitude improvement in light intensity over current micro-display approaches. mLED reckons that its microLEDs can open up new segments within the nascent market for embedded pico projectors (in a broad range of portable devices, from bar code scanners to smartphones). It is therefore developing a roadmap of products aimed at a range of high volume embedded applications, and is already commercially engaged with leading system integrators.

Recently, Philips has signed a partnership contract and agreement with Gold Biotechnology Inc., a supplier of molecular biology research chemicals based in St. Louis, MO, to designate GoldBio as a certified Philips LED Horti Partner.
