Digital Lumens today announced that DiloSpinnbau, a manufacturer of universal and high-capacity carding machines used to process nonwoven fibers, has upgraded its 6,600 square meter manufacturing facility to the Digital Lumens Intelligent Lighting System, saving 91 percent of its lighting energy costs annually.

By replacing its T8 fluorescent fixtures with the Digital Lumens system, DiloSpinnbau gained a highly controllable and efficient LED lighting solution that significantly improved lighting quality and illumination levels, while saving more than 351,000 kWh of electricity and 200,000 kilos/64 tons of CO2 annually.


By rapidly accumulating energy and maintenance savings, DiloSpinnbau was able to secure an investment payback period of 1.7 years, with annual savings in excess of Euros 72,000, or more than Euros 363,000 over five years. By taking advantage of natural light from the facility’s many skylights and windows, the Intelligent Lighting Systems’ integrated daylight harvesting capabilities increased overall energy savings by 35 percent, adding to the already substantial savings enabled by its built-in occupancy sensors. Maintenance-free, the Intelligent Lighting System also eliminates the re-lamping and re-ballasting costs associated with the previous T8 fluorescent fixtures.

Now, a team of researchers led by Purdue University has found a way to grow more produce and save money doing it.Greenhouses and other structures protect crops from harsh environmental conditions. Over the last 50 years or so, some growers have added artificial lighting to compensate for shorter winter days or when conditions are cloudy. However, the problem with most lighting systems is that they are relatively costly to install and do not provide the light spectrum that is most efficient for photosynthesis in plants.

The Purdue-led team of academic and industry scientists from Wisconsin, Michigan, and New Jersey is using grant funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to investigate the use of LED to address this problem. The researchers have designed LEDs that produce the exact light quality plants need to thrive while using only a fraction of the electricity used by high-pressure sodium lamps—the current industry standard. In experiments in West Lafayette, IN, the team’s led flood light systems used 75 percent less electricity to produce the same product yield. There are currently about 4,200 acres of greenhouses in the United States that use supplemental lighting. If LED systems were installed in each of these greenhouses, energy use could be reduced by 3.5 billion kilowatt hours. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a reduction of that much energy would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by almost 3 million tons per year.

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation has completed installation of a 1,513-inch Diamond Vision large-scale display system, which instead of the previous CRT screens installed in 1996, and becomes the second largest display at a Japanese boat racecourse and the largest in the Kyushu area.

It displays high-definition video content, incorporates high-luminance LEDs aligned vertically and horizontally in a 15-millimeter dot pitch and the latest digital screen controllers.


The display system faces the main stand across the racing surface, and will flexibly display a variety of programs such as dynamic live race videos, contestant profiles, odds, order of arrival and other gaming information.

Kaneka will only produce OLEDs on glass using vapor deposition

With the development of this new chip, the company will further develop a series of LED driver LSIs that support applications for displays with high picture quality across a wide range of sizes.

Kaneka is also showing some new OLED lamp prototypes (shown above and below). The "Light Object" above uses three separate lamps which you can arrange in various ways. Each lamp has its own battery (lasts for an hour) and the base is the charger. In the desk lamp (shown below) the base acts as a dimmer and an on/off switch - which you can simply control by touching.


Kaneka aims to achieve ¥20 billion in sales within five years and ¥100 billion   in sales within 10 years. The company also announced that they acquired the OLED lighting business of Tohuko Device. Kaneka will only produce OLEDs on glass using vapor deposition and does not have any plans to print OLEDs.

There are no details about the OLED panel itself

Toshiba developed a new portable OLED lamp - and they will make 100 units of this lamp, and donate these to quake-hit areas (50 units were already donated to the evacuation center in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture). Toshiba has no plans to sell these to consumers. The lamps run from either four AAA alkaline batteries or from the embedded rechargeable battery - and Toshiba bundle the lamp with a solar-panel (it can also be recharged via a USB port).

The lamp measure 146x100x18.5mm (at the thickest part) and weight 180g without the batteries. There are no details about the OLED panel itself, which is made by Toshiba. We only know that lamp brightness is 53 lm (similar to a desk lamp) with 100% brightness, it can be dimmed to 30% or 10%.

Using the alkaline batteries, the lamp can be used for two hours on 100% brightness (or 10 hours with 30% brightness and 20 hours with 10% brightness). The rechargeable batteries offer 3 to 4 times more battery life.

This is the first time we see an OLED lighting panel from Toshiba. We knew that TMDisplay is developing OLED lighting equipment, but we did not know that Toshiba is developing OLED lighting panels.

It will make sense when all lights replaced LED lights

According to the Institute of Energy Economics (IEE) of Japan, a foundation supervised by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, if LED lights replace all the fluorescent and incandescent Led high bay light used in the country, 92.2 billion kilowatts of electricity -- worth the output of 13 nuclear reactors -- would be saved, that is, the annual domestic power consumption would be slashed by 9 percent.

A group of researchers led by Yoshiaki Shibata at the institute conducted the calculation. According to their survey, among an estimated 1.6 billion lights being used in Japan, 870 million of them at households, 580 million at offices and commercial buildings and 160 million in the manufacturing sector.

Translated into annual power consumption, they equal to 38.2 billion kilowatts per hour of electricity is used at households, 89.1 billion kilowatts per hour at offices and 23.3 billion kilowatts per hour in the manufacturing industry, totaling 150.6 billion kilowatts per hour.

It will make sense when all lights replaced LED lights, as the annual power consumption is estimated to decline to kilowatts per hour at households, 34.6 billion kilowatts per hour at offices and 9.7 billion kilowatts per hour in the manufacturing sector, totaling 58.4 billion kilowatts.

One of AIXTRON′s local support teams in China will commission the new reactor in a new state of the art facility at the University.According to Dr. Jian Liang, Professor of Taiyuan University of Technology’s Material College State Laboratory, this will be their first AIXTRON epitaxial growth system. They are particularly interested in its versatility as well as stand-out factors such as low material consumption. These will ensure that this system is so much superior for their University research project.The systems will be used to increase GPI’s capacity for the production of HB LEDs being driven by applications such as backlighting, lighting, displays, and automotive.

In the contrast, Epistar reported that it won’t follow the practice of Everlight. Neither did Chimei-Innolux have the plan to ask their staffers to take unpaid leave.Yeh reported that despite the unpaid leave program, revenue of Everlight in the fourth quarter will still be higher than the third quarter but the LED industry won’t recover until the second half next year. In the past, a business cycle for the industry lasts four years but it has been shortened to two years now.For the future development of the LED industry, backlight LED will be dominated by South Korean firms, while the Taiwanese industry can only focus on LED lighting, according to Yeh.In Yeh’s opinion, the LED lighting will enter a warring period, in which success will hinge on technology, quality, marketing, and overall competitiveness. Everlight will focus on the development of own brand and after winning the patent litigation over Nichia, the company will continue prevailing over its rivals in other countries.

LED lights to account for half of the global lighting business

Citing estimates that the global LED lighting industry's output will grow by a compound annual rate of 32 percent between 2010 and 2020, the Alliance said the brisk growth will drive the sector's expansion in the next few years.In 2011, Shenzhen accounted for about one-fifth of the production value of the global LED business, making it the third largest LED supplier in the world.Alliance convener Alex Tong said the LED lighting business has flourished in the past few years on demand for street lights, but that demand has now extended to indoor lighting and even family living rooms, creating more opportunities.Tong, the director of the Green Energy and Environment Research Laboratories under the government-financed Industrial Technology Research Institute, said he expects LED lights to account for half of the global lighting business in 2020 if its current pace of growth continues.

Analysts said several Shenzhenese LED product suppliers, such as Delta Electronics, Chicony Power Technology, Lite-On Technology and Edison Opto, have devoted increasing resources to penetrating the LED lighting market to lift their sales.According to the new set-up Shenzhen LED Lighting Industry Alliance, Shenzhen's LED industry is expected to benefit from high growth in the global LED lighting business in 2013.Chiang Wen-hsing, head of Delta ' s LED lighting operations, said his company's revenue from LED lighting grew an estimated 30 to 40 percent in 2012 on strong demand for LED bulbs, tubes and lighting fixtures from the Europe, the United States, and Japan.In 2013, Chiang said, Delta ' LED lighting division is likely to see its sales double because of even stronger global demand.He said Delta will install an automated manufacturing process during the 2013-2014 period to further strengthen its production and cut operating costs.

Everlight said its LED lighting sales were better than expected in Q4 because of demand from Europe and the U.S. ahead of the Christmas holiday, said Hsu Hsi-chuan, head of the company's lighting research and development division.The strong fourth quarter revenue also reflected rush orders from China, where buyers were eager to restock their inventories ahead of the peak Lunar New Year holiday buying season in mid-February.Hsu said that judging from the orders the company has received, the LED lighting business is unlikely to feel the sales slowdown the industry traditionally faces in the first quarter.Supported by government policies and ongoing economic development, China will be the biggest LED lighting market, he added. The ITRI said the output of Shenzhen’s LED industry accounts for 19 percent of global production making it the third-largest LED supplier.The alliance remains upbeat for the future, “We forecast the macroeconomy will turn positive and the LED industry’s sales performance will improve next year.
